This is not the ordinary art exhibit, but rather an interactive art experience telling the story of black
American culture through children’s literature. With both traditional art forms, video installations, and live
exhibits, our goal is to shine light on the past, celebrate the future, and make way for the future.
Why it’s important:
We want to celebrate great stories that are already written, but also encourage the next generation to
take up the art of story creation. According to an analysis of the Cooperative Children’s Book Center at the
University of Wisconsin, of 3,200 children’s books published in 2013, just 93 were about black people.
FLASHLIGHT is an interactive art experience highlighting the story of black American culture through children’s literature. With traditional art forms, video installations, and live exhibits, FLASHLIGHT shines light on the past, celebrates the present, and makes way for the future. Tanae Denean Eskridge, author and spoken word artist, is hosting an art exhibit entitled “FLASHLIGHT: Celebrating Black America in Children’s Literature” in conjunction with the release of her first children’s book LITTLE DELL. This exciting exhibition will be held at the Mayme Clayton Library and Museum in Culver City, California. The Mayme Clayton Library is one of the leading collections of African-American art, media, and literature in the country.
