Dee, a gritty 10-year-old, in an impoverished Chicago south-side neighborhood, fights to evade a life of abuse, poverty, and despair by commandeering freedom and love from a family she seizes as her own. Her advanced intellectual prowess and unkempt appearance make her an outsider to her peers, except for one fellow misfit friend Pee-Wee.
After her mother is taken to jail for domestic violence, and all too familiar with the foster care system, Dee vows not to return to foster care at all costs.
Drawing on a mustard seed of faith, her prayers are answered when an elderly couple provides a shot at a brighter, safer, happier life. Yet, she is determined to salvage what remains of her tattered mother-daughter relationship and make a stable family with her mother.
